I cant work out why these pigs are getting barbecued fruit, bit odd really, but man their having fun in the water… I love watching my pigs have a mud bath…

It is important to make sure that your pig always has access to clean drinking water. Water is just as important to them as it is to us.

When your pig is thirsty, it will drink. Some pigs need a ot of water whilst others seem to seldom touch it. They will also consume more water at different times of the year. summer being the most obvious.

It is also important to ensure that your pig’s water bowl is strong and sturdy. Pigs love nothing more than trying to get in their water bowl and if it is too flimsy they will tip it over or break it. If your pig is getting into its water bowl, be sure to clean it out regularly. An important thing to remember with pigs is that they don’t actually sweat. The only place a pig ‘sweats” is out of the top end of their nose.

Because pigs don’t sweat like humans, it is important to help keep them cool during hot summer days. If your pig doesn’t have the facilities to cool down, they can get heat stroke, which can be fatal.

If you don’t have a dam or pond for your pig to wallow and bathe in, you can use a kiddie pool (the cheap blue plastic shells) or make a wallow for them. Pigs prefer mud holes to water as they can wallow in the mud and also coat themselves with it. The caked mud keeps insects from getting to their skin and also works as a sun screen.

“You should never try and teach a pig to read for two reasons. First, it’s impossible; and secondly, it annoys the hell out of the pig” – Will Rogers
